The Affordable Care Act has made preventive care more accessible and affordable for many Americans and established the Health Insurance Marketplace. You can compare different plans and explore any free or low-cost programs you may qualify for, including Medicaid (SoonerCare) and Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP). When you use the Marketplace you may be able to get lower costs on your monthly premiums and out-of-pocket costs. Once you fill out an application, you will be able to find out how much you can save.

Every plan in the Marketplace offers ten essential health benefits, including preventative or wellness services, emergency services, hospitalization, ambulatory patient services, maternity/newborn care, prescriptions, mental health services, pediatric services, substance use disorder services and habilitative services and devices.

You can compare your options and find a health plan that meets your needs and fits your budget. Health insurance companies can’t deny you coverage or charge you more due to pre-existing conditions and they can’t charge women and men different premiums.

There are key dates you’ll want to mark on your calendar

Medicaid Unwinding (Public Health Emergency Ending)

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, routine SoonerCare eligibility renewals were paused as part of the Public Health Emergency (PHE). Medicaid agencies were required to continue health care coverage for members, even if their eligibility changed. This means members could continue being covered by SoonerCare during the PHE, even if they no longer qualified.

Oklahoma will soon be required to restart eligibility reviews for all SoonerCare member due to the passage of federal legislation in December.

Eligibility renewals will resume beginning in spring 2023. Currently, OHCA plans to first notify impacted members in February.
